Peter Kubelka is known not only as an outstanding experimental filmmaker and artist, but also as an astute culinary theoretician. His art-philosophical stance, which incorporates objects from the Museum’s collection as non-verbal actors, is dedicated to the extra values of cooking. For Kubelka, the preparation of food – its architecture – is the world’s oldest art form.

Δ Cultural Truths

In 1961, Peter Kubelka accompanied a group of Europeans on a big game hunting safari in Africa and recorded the situation. The result was a 12½ minute 16mm film, “Unsere Afrikareise” (Our trip to Africa), which was produced over a period of five years and became a model for a new language of film in which only original images and sounds are used without background music. Peter Kubelka will screen his film and discuss it alongside a selection of ethnographic films from the image archive of the Museum.
