Δ Freestyle Text Training with Phyllis Kiehl

The idea of the Freestyle workshops is to give young people a basis on which they can personally address the hi/stories latent in our Museum – by writing. The active engagement with the objects and contexts assumes that not only they are motivated but the Museum also considers itself an institution that exists not only for those who already have some knowledge of the fields it covers...

This is the reasoning behind our program for young people that encourages them to sit down together at a table and, beyond the world of everyday museum visits, swap ideas and forge links.

 

Freestyle relies fully on voices.

The focus is firmly on the moment when previously alien objects start to have a voice, are surrounded by cultural meaning and can be integrated by writing into a personal world of experience. This sets processes in motion that often culminate in highly sensitive, poetic and at times humorous texts.

 

Freestyle was and is a challenge – after all, the intention is to kindle the young people’s enthusiasm for Weltkulturen Museum. A safe haven such as a writing room is a good place to foster concentration in minds otherwise exposed to a flood of stimuli while also heightening the pleasure to be gained from creatively engaging with objects in the Museum and with one’s self. Frequently these worlds are not actually as far apart as initially assumed. No doubt this is also one of the reasons why many of the young people have been taking part in Freestyle from day one.

 

To date, it has always been objects from the Museum’s teaching collection that were, following introductions by the curators, then taken as the starting point for free association. This time, the workshop will explore the stories in the current exhibition. Stephanie Endter, Head of Education, will give the introduction, and in the exhibition space participants will sit and write. We’re very intrigued to see what influence this new form of brokering contact with the objects will have on our writing.
