The World Through Your Ears: "King of the Jew's Harp".
Concert with Anton Bruhin, Jew's Harp player, story teller and artist (CH).
Δ WELTKULTUREN EVENING SCHOOL The World Through Your Ears: "King of the Jew's Harp". Concert with Anton Bruhin, Jew’s Harp player, story teller and artist (CH).

The Jew's Harp is a small musical instrument with a reverberating metal tongue that uses a sound generation principle that can be found in many traditional musical instruments around the world. Bruhin is the “Brummeisenkönig”, the master of this small instrument!

Anton Bruhin belongs to a rare species of person. He is an all-rounder. Today this is something special, even anachronistic. For in contrast to producers of Gesamtkunstwerks, and synaesthetes, it is sound artists who specialise in one particular art form that are en vogue. Bruhin observes, collects and rearranges, and has a polymathic perspective on the world. Everything is useful. An old broken chair is reassembled and hung on the wall; a cake rack is transformed into a printing plate. Typographic characters are decontextualised, enlarged and reconsidered in terms of their potential as images and objects. Language, words and their meanings are subjected to a strict pattern of relapse and arranged as compendia of palindromes. Painting, drawing, writing poetry, designing, making music – these provide the parallel and yet overlapping tracks of Bruhin’s existence as an artist. He may switch between the fields of art but he remains authentic in each and every sphere. He is a world-renowned player of the mouth bow (Jew's Harp) which he collects in every shape and kind, and even makes his own. He performs as a soloist and in bands, plays the Swiss Landler (folk song) and spans jazz, improvisation and classical music. For Bruhin, the mouth becomes a resonance cavity.

Curated by Oliver Augst (Musician and Composer) and Vanessa von Gliszczynski (Ethnomusicologist and Research Curator South East Asia, Weltkulturen Museum).

The World Through Your Ears: "Ancient Yodelling".
Concert with Christine Lauterburg, yodeler who plays the Langnauer Örgeli, the violin and the viola (CH).
Δ WELTKULTUREN EVENING SCHOOL The World Through Your Ears: "Ancient Yodelling".

Concert with Christine Lauterburg, yodeler who plays the Langnauer Örgeli, the violin and the viola (CH).

Around twenty years ago Christine Lauterburg, born and bred in Bern, began creating a stir in the Swiss yodelling community. At the time yodelling was the bastion of patriotic defenders of the “Fatherland”. Then suddenly new tones and the words appeared such as, “he nei aber ou...!” (Not him but you!). Christine Lauterberg is exceptional because she sings both in the new style and in the old idiom. In the 1990s she even made the Swiss charts with Yodel pop songs such as “S'Vreneli vom Guggisberg” and “Anneli”.

    Christine Lauterburg:
“I had a happy childhood and youth in Bern and the surrounding region, where I trained in a number of vocations: at the Seminar Marzili as a waitress, and at acting school. Then I did a lot of theatre and took on film roles in Europe and beyond. Even as a child I always wanted to be a singer and then finally, after thirty years, I found out WHAT I could sing: that is, songs in my own language and the age-old “Juhz”. By writing my own music and songs, I was able to find myself through singing. I now consider myself very fortunate to be able to collaborate and play with some of the best musicians around!”
