Δ WELTKULTUREN EVENING SCHOOL The World Through Your Ears: “All about KDW: brand new!” Lecture-Performance with musical examples. Rüdiger Carl (DE)

In an entertaining lecture-performance made up of stories, biographical anecdotes, statistics and musical samples, Frankfurt-born musician, composer and King of the World, Rüdiger Carl, provides a comprehensive panorama of the world’s cultures, making a pun on KDW (Kaufhaus des Westens), the famous Berlin department store. An entertaining, informative lecture…

Rüdiger Carl is one of the most influential German musicians of the past 50 years. His work spans Free Improvisation, Free Jazz and many more genres. Since the 1960s he has collaborated with a wide variety of musicians, composers and performers, including Irène Schweizer, Hans Reichel, Sven-Åke Johansson, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Peter Brötzmann, as well as cabaret artiste Matthias Beltz. Since the 1990s, he has worked with representatives of the younger generation of experimental musicians such as Oliver Augst, Burkard Kunkel, Christoph Korn and Alexandre Bellenger. Carl has founded several ensembles and bands and initiated projects and collaborations with visual artists such as Werner Büttner, Albert Oehlen, Martin Kippenberger, Günther Förg, Raymond Pettibon and Tobias Rehberger. In addition he pursues a solo career as a composer, singer, theatre and radio performer. Impossible to pigeon-hole, Rüdiger Carl’s career path has been unorthodox, marked by unexpected twists and turns, intentional breaks, experiments and acts of non-compliance, which make him a original in the German art world.

Curated by Oliver Augst (Musician and Composer) and Vanessa von Gliszczynski (Ethnomusicologist and Research Curator South East Asia, Weltkulturen Museum).

The World Through Your Ears: “Vocal solo” Concert with Phil Minton (UK)
Δ WELTKULTUREN EVENING SCHOOL The World Through Your Ears: “Vocal solo” Concert with Phil Minton (UK)

Londonvocalist Phil Minton is considered one of the most significant musicians on the British Improvisation scene. Having begun his music career as a trumpet player, in 1962 he joined the Mike Westbrook Orchestra as a vocalist. After spending several years on the Canary Islands and in Sweden, he returned to London in 1971, went on tour with Westbrook and worked for The Welfare State and IOU theatre ensembles. In 1975, together with Maggie Nichols and Julie Tippets, Minton founded the trail-blazing group VOICE.

Throughout the 1980s he worked in Europe, Russia, America and Australia – as part of various duos with Fred Frith, Roger Turner and Peter Brötzmann, in Lindsay Cooper’s “Oh Moscow”, Trevor Watts’ “Moiré Music”, in Sally Potter’s film “The Gold Differs”, as well as giving guest performances within numerous projects.

During the 1990s he (together with Veryan Weston) composed “Songs from a Prison Diary” for 22 voices, which won him the Cornelius Cardew Prize for composition in 1991, “Makhno” for eight voices and “River Run” for his own quartet. As a vocalist he has also worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Jubilation Choir and his own Feral Choir Project (Stockholm and Berlin).

Δ WELTKULTUREN EVENING SCHOOL The World Through Your Ears: "Vocal solo". Workshop with Phil Minton (UK)

The workshop is open to everyone who can breathe. I encourage participants to explore their voices with simple exercises and improvisations, with the aim of extending their vocal range and vision of the potential of their voices.
