    BOOK LAUNCH
    “Doner Hawaii: Globalised Eating”
    With author Marin Trenk
    Δ BOOK LAUNCH

    “Doner Hawaii: Globalised Eating”

With Marin Trenk (Author) and Hans Zimmermann (Moderation).

“Trenk knows why the Maggi bouillon cube even became popular in West Africa (fascination with the European lifestyle) and why a chicken tikka masala with its chunks of chicken in a spicy tomato sauce symbolises Great Britain’s victory over its former Indian colony (a Brit claimed the dish was a bit dry and insisted on more sauce).” Katja Thimm, Der Spiegel, 14.03.2015

Globalised cuisine, interweaving ingredients and cooking styles, is by no means just a phenomenon of the modern, networked world. It is anchored in every culinary tradition and inherent to all forms of migration. Marin Trenk’s book opens up perspectives on unfamiliar gastronomic cultures, food taboos and culinary quirks, while also showing the elements that connect them. Can you travel around the world in eighty dishes?

Professor Marin Trenk researches the world’s gastronomic cultures. He teaches culinary ethnology at the Institute of Anthropology, Goethe University Frankfurt. A member of the Kulinaristik-Forum, an interdisciplinary network of scholars and representatives of various industries, his main field of research is Thailand’s gastronomic culture.

The book presentation is introduced and led by Hans Zimmermann, anthropologist, master butcher and chairmember of the Weltkulturen Friends.

    CURATOR'S GUIDED TOUR
    With Prof. Philippe Pirotte
    Δ CURATOR'S GUIDED TOUR

With Prof. Philippe Pirotte, Director of the Städelschuleand Portikus, and Co-Curator of the exhibition

Philippe Pirotte guides you through the exhibition and discusses the different aspects of El Hadji Sy's practice as a painter and a cultural activist.

For El Hadji Sy, painting is prompted by a set of performative or choreographic gestures revealing his engagement with society at large. His large-format paintings on industrial jute sacking once used to transport rice or sugar to Dakar, his painted mobile paravents that stand in anticipation like actors on a set, and his semi-functional structures such as kites, floor paintings or double-sided painted mirrors together generate situations that implicate the spectators as actors within the installation. In addition, El Hadji Sy introduces a variety of materials into his work, from oils and acrylic on canvas or rice sacking, to tar and paint on butcher’s wrapping paper, through to experiments with traditional formats such as reverse glass painting.

Philippe Pirotte is a Belgian art historian, critic, and curator of numerous international exhibitions. Since 2014 he has been Dean of the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule and director of Portikus, Frankfurt am Main. Since 2012 he has been the adjunct senior curator at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. In 1999 he co-founded the art centre Objectif_Exhibitions in Antwerp. From 2005 to 2011, he was director of the Kunsthalle Bern. Pirotte has written numerous essays about contemporary art and artists, and contributed to Nka – Journal of Contemporary African Art, Afterall Journal, Kaleidoscope, Mousse Magazine and Parkett.
