Δ CURATOR'S GUIDED TOUR “EL HADJI SY: PAINTING, PERFORMANCE, POLITICS”

With Dr. Yvette Mutumba, Research Curator Africa at the Weltkulturen Museum, and Co-Curator of the exhibition

Dr. Yvette Mutumba highlights the museum’s early engagement with contemporary art from Africa by presenting the first retrospective of the Senegalese painter and curator El Hadji Sy, whose involvement with the Weltkulturen Museum stretches back to 1985.

The Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt not only holds an exceptional collection of 70,000 historical ethnographic objects from four continents, it owns over 3,000 works of contemporary art from Africa. Collected from 1974 onward, these works constitute important art-historical testimonials from West, East, Southern and Central Africa, providing essential perspectives on art from the African continent produced before what has been termed the global turn of 1989.

    Δ WORKSHOP

    “Recording Indonesian Music”

Philip Yampolsky  (Ethnomusicologist, Illinois) and Endo Suanda (Ethnomusicologist, Indonesia)

Using photographs and music samples, the workshop traces the history of recording Indonesian music from the first commercial recording in 1903 to the eras of compact cassettes and CDs. In the process, it also highlights the different histories of music recording in Indonesia. Commercial recordings were subject to the laws of the market, and any music style not selling well was simply no longer produced. On the other hand, documentary recordings are independent of current trends, and primarily intend to preserve the wealth of Indonesia’s musical heritage.

    Δ LECTURE

“My Friends from the Roof of Language”
    Afrizal Malna (Author, Indonesia)

In poems taking a critical look at language, Indonesian writer of poetry and prose Afrizal Malna explores the complex relationship between language, body and space. Combining a humorous approach with a confrontational method, Malna uncovers the critical points of urban life in Indonesia, juxtaposing everyday images and objects in his “visual grammar of things”.

In 2009, the TEMPO selected his collection of poetry “Teman-temanku dari atap bahasa” (My Friends from the Roof of Language) as the best literary work of the year. Malna’s poems are presented in Indonesian and German.

“Die Insel der Dämonen” (Island of Demons) (1933, 75 Min.) – A film by Victor Baron von Plessen, Friedrich Dalsheim and Walter Spies

    Wednesday, 28th October, 7pm

A masterpiece of ethnographic cinema – now publicly screened again for the first time.
Bali – the last paradise on earth or a lived utopia? The inhabitants of Bedulu, a small Balinese village, live happily and peacefully, at one with nature. The trouble starts when Wajan, the son of the village witch, falls in love with Sari, the daughter of a respected figure in the village. The film recounts the story of their love, caught the anger of a demon and social difficulty.

Between 1929 and 1938, Baron von Plessen visited Indonesia as an ornithologist and anthropologist on several major expeditions. In 1932, “Island of Demons” was filmed with local Balinese amateur actors at original locations on the island. The film was premiered in Germany on 16th February 1933.
