STORIES NARRATE HISTORY focuses on untold personal perspectives of individuals connected to the Weltkulturen Museum. Narratives talking about doubts or life changing moments in life, of joyful or curious incidents, offer an unusual, almost intimate insight into the life and work in the buildings on Schaumainkai 29–37.

Curator Mona Suhrbier offers an insight into the different perspectives on the objects on display.

“From a culture of welcome to structures of welcome”

With Ramy Al-Asheq (chief editor of the newspaper Abwab, writer and journalist) and Dr. Sabine Kroner (project coordinator Berlin Mondiale)

During times of flight and migration, cultural work must address the question of the inclusion measures for all involved. How can people arriving in Germany as refugees exercise their rights to education and social participation? What cultural education formats are best suited to promoting participation in cultural life? What do cultural practitioners and project managers have to be aware of to make their activities a success? What is needed for different mindsets and sensitivities to work well together?

Here, cultural education seems to be an appropriate area, with many ambitious projects presently being developed and also realised with refugees. But which structures do cultural and educational institutions have to create to ensure that their work reflecting and supporting diversity can be effective in the longer term as well? And which conditions do cultural workers, who fled their countries, need to act?

    ARTIST’S GUIDED TOUR
“SHOW ME WHERE YOU COME FROM - Children draw their homes, flight and dreams”
With Dieter Mammel (artist, Berlin and Frankfurt)
    Δ ARTIST’S GUIDED TOUR

Since September 2015, artist Dieter Mammel paints together with refugee children in two of Berlin’s initial reception camps. In this process, the children, aged five to fifteen, have created impressive personal drawings and group paintings. They recount the children’s origins in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, their journeys to Germany, and their first impressions when they arrived. From the children’s perspective, they tell of tank deployments and shelling, dangerous sea crossings in unsafe boats, heavily guarded borders and fears – yet also of friendship, their future hopes and dreams.

Dieter Mammel offers an insight into the origins of the exhibition “SHOW ME WHERE YOU COME FROM - Children draw their homes, flight and dreams”.

    TALK
    “Museums in the Third Reich”
    With Sebastian Farnung (Historican, Frankfurt)
    Δ TALK

    “Museums in the Third Reich”

    With Sebastian Farnung (Historican, Frankfurt)

The seizure of power by the National Socialists ushered in significant changes in the cultural and arts sector, just as in all other areas of life. The Nazi regime’s cultural policy also affected Frankfurt’s museums. The attempts at exercising outside influence are well documented, especially in the area of museum personnel.

Did the measures introduced by the Nazi regime frequently have a negative impact, or did museums also profit from them? In an era permeated by contradictions, these issues and the fate of the museum in the course of the war offer a multifaceted view of the former Museum of Ethnology, which is here taken as an example to explain the Nazi regime’s policies and their reach.

Sebastian Farnung presented his doctorate on “Cultural policy in the Third Reich illustrated by the example of Frankfurt’s museums” at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. In 2009, the Frankfurt Historical Commission awarded his thesis the Johann Philipp von Bethmann Prize. In 2016, it was then published as Volume 63 in the series “Studien zur Frankfurter Geschichte”.

The talk is preceded by a curator’s guided tour through the exhibition STORIES NARRATE HISTORY with Alice Pawlik. The tour is included in the admission fee. Read on

    CITY TOURS FOR REFUGEES
With Dieter Wesp and Hans Zimmermann
    Δ CITY TOURS FOR REFUGEES

Specifically designed for refugees, these city tours help people who have fled their homes to become familiar with life in Frankfurt.

As urban walks, the tours offer practical advice, information and an initial orientation directly at the stops on the route. In this way, the Römerberg can tell of the history of Frankfurt as a centre of international trade, the Paulskirche introduce the development of democracy in Germany, and the Cathedral offers an insight into the city’s religious traditions. In contrast, the Weltkulturen Museum presents the world of non-European cultures and ideas. The range of food and culinary dishes on offer at the “Kleinmarkthalle” market hall reflects Frankfurt’s international character. The municipal library, museums and free WiFi are all a support for facilitating new contacts, finding information, reading newspapers and books, and borrowing language course materials.

Since the tours are given in simple German with a written translation of key words in Arabic, Pashto and Tigrinya, the entire walk fosters the language skills of Frankfurt’s new residents.

These city tours are offered free of charge by volunteer city district historians from the Stiftung Polytechnischen Gesellschaft Frankfurt am Main and tour guides from the Frankfurt Tour Guide Association (Frankfurter Stadt- und Gästeführer e.V.).

City Tours for Refugees is a project organised by the Friends of the Weltkulturen Museum, the Frankfurt Tour Guide Association (Frankfurter Stadt- und Gästeführer e.V.) and Frankfurt hilft - Engagement für Flüchtlinge. With the generous support of the Stiftung Polytechnischen Gesellschaft Frankfurt am Main.

    WORLD PREMIERE

    Δ WORLD PREMIERE

“shortcut: Musical textures. A world première. Prelude to THE COMMON THREAD exhibition”

With Raphaël Languillat and Tobias Hagedorn (composers, Frankfurt)

How musical is a textile? Can compositions of warp and weft threads, ikat patterns and brocading be transformed into tapestries of sound?

Raphaël Languillat and Tobias Hagedorn have taken a silk scarf from Java and an East Indonesian ikat fabric as their inspirations for contemporary compositions. This event marks the world premiere of Languillat’s “Vision of the Cosmic Light” for viola d’amore, two baroque violas and four modern violas, as well as Hagedorn’s electronic composition “Web Mechanisms”.

From 17th November, the works are also being presented in the Weltkulturen Museum’s THE COMMON THREAD exhibition together with the textiles that inspired them.

This project is a cooperation between the Weltkulturen Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Music (IzM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt (HfMDK).
