“Sound Sources. Everything is Music!”
With Iris Loew (cultural mediator)Δ PUBLIC GUIDED TOUR“Sound Sources. Everything is Music!”
with Iris Loew (cultural mediator)
Sounds determine our everyday lives and can be heard all around us, even in what seem to be the quietest moments. Every single place has its own soundscape, shaped by our immediate surroundings, by animals and people, by their actions and interactions. How does the setting affect the perception of what we hear? How do the environment, sound, people and music relate to each other?
Iris Loew takes visitors on a tour around the exhibition and enter into a dialogue with contemporary music and encourage visitors to reflect upon the significance of sounds in their own lifeworld.

“Sound sources. Everything is Music!”
With Vanessa von Gliszczynski (Curator of the Southeast Asia collection)Δ CURATORS' GUIDED TOUREverything is music?
Final tour of the exhibition with curator Vanessa von Gliszczynski
At the close of the exhibition Sound Sources. Everything is Music!, Vanessa von Gliszczynski will reflect on the exhibition topics and impressions from the exhibition period in an open tour. There is a lot to discuss. Is really everything music? What is music at all and is the concept of music perhaps not only different depending on cultural background, but also quite subjective? Please note that an angklung workshop will be taking place on the upper floor from 3 p.m. and that it may therefore get a little louder in the exhibition. All visitors are invited to watch and listen to the workshop participants. Otherwise, we recommend that you visit the exhibition in more detail before the guided tour and workshop.

∇ WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS
“Hearing the sound of silence”
Workshop led by Martin Brüger, meditation trainer and artistΔ WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS"Hearing the sound of silence”
With Martin Brüger (meditation trainer and artist)Sound and silence aren’t just opposites, they are the two indivisible extremes of hearing, because silence can only be experienced via sound and vice versa. In this guided meditative workshop connected with the exhibition “SOUND SOURCES. Everything Is Music”, we will find out about various meditative exercises that sharpen our sense of hearing and let us develop an awareness of hearing as a process that ultimately takes place in our consciousness rather than in our ears. The exercises presented here will offer the participants a whole new dimension of experience that extends from meditatively listening to self-made and external sounds through to chilling in the power of audio silence. And sound, of course, is also a means of communication: after a phase of meditative sensitisation to sound and silence we will round off the evening with a communal sound/silence performance. Nobody needs musical skills for this workshop; it is much more about being open to insights about hearing processes, and being eager to find out about a more sensitive perception of ourselves and our surroundings.
No prior experience required
Workshop attendance: 6 euros plus the cost of admission to the exhibition.

With: Frank Purwanto and Heri DjajasumadiΔ Gamelan-Workshop with Wacana Budaya, Frank Purwanto and Heri Djajasumadi (gamelan orchestra directors)With: Frank Purwanto und Heri Djajasumadi
Gamelan orchestras are an important aspect of Javanese and Balinese court cultures, but there are also smaller ensembles in the villages. While the metallophones play the melody, the gongs are responsible for the rhythm. The group is conducted by predefined combinations of drum beats which determine the speed or volume. Gamelan orchestras can play on their own or as an accompaniment to dancing or shadow puppetry. There are also smaller gong ensembles on other Indonesian islands, but the Javanese or Balinese gamelan is the most well known by far.
As part of the "Sound Sources" exhibition, the gamelan orchestra Wacana Budaya regularly offers workshops in the exhibition. Wacana Budaya from Frankfurt Höchst was founded in 1984. During the workshop, you will play on instruments from the museum collection on the upper floor of the exhibition.
