Sounds determine our everyday lives and can be heard all around us, even in what seem to be the quietest moments. Every single place has its own soundscape, shaped by our immediate surroundings, by animals and people, by their actions and interactions. How does the setting affect the perception of what we hear? How do the environment, sound, people and music relate to each other?

Ute Hecht takes visitors on a tour around the exhibition and enter into a dialogue with contemporary music and encourage visitors to reflect upon the significance of sounds in their own lifeworld.

    Δ WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS

    “Soundwalking”
with Antonia A. V. Beeskow (artist, sound designer and performer)

The participants of this workshop will leave the exhibition and go out into the city, where they will be taken on an auditory tour through Frankfurt accompanied by the sounds of their surroundings and pre-produced soundtracks. This audio walk, lasting approximately 90 minutes, portrays the concept of a soundscape as a journey through space and time and alludes to the elements of everyday life at an auditory level. The group will come together once more at the end and discuss what they have just experienced. What does it sound like along the River Main in summer and in winter? How do we listen to our surroundings when wearing headphones, or when simply using our ears? What do we hear – and what don’t we hear?

Soundworlds in dialogue – international crossover
    with students of Popakademie Baden-Württemberg
    Δ CONCERT DURING THE EXHIBITION

Soundworlds in dialogue – international crossover with students of Popakademie Baden-Württemberg

Percusiano (Max Gerwien und Ilja Ruf)

Bero (Emanuel Abanto, Berivan Canbolat and Dominik Gusch)

Bridging cultural boundaries, finding common creativity and joy from the diversity of sound cultures: No other cultural form is closer to this than making music together. This is also demonstrated by the two Mannheim based bands Percusiano and Bero, whose members all study at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.

In Percusiano, percussionist Max Gerwien and pianist Ilja Ruf enter into a musical dialogue. The two met at the Popakademie in 2020. They are united by a shared love of interpretation, with which they have been delighting audiences in this formation since 2022. The duo promises a varied programme of different musical styles, emotionally and creatively performed with numerous percussion instruments from different continents as well as piano.

Bero fuses pop and rock with traditional sounds and invites you into a world full of sounds and colours. Pulsating grooves and rock guitar meet the tones of the Turkish long-necked lute baglama and unite to create a mutual sound. Bero wants to use their music to connect people and build cultural bridges in order to make a contribution to greater community and solidarity.

With both Percusiano and Bero, traditional and new sounds are in dialogue and lead to innovative sonic interpretations and concepts of music.

The concert is organised in cooperation with the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.

Limited number of participants, registration required!

Δ WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG ADULTS AND ADULTS

    "Seeing with your ears
    with Lasse-Marc Riek (sound artist)

The world is full of noises: familiar, loud, rare, barely audible, entrancing, funny, surprising, sad, confusing, playful… but all too seldom do we listen to them attentively. The participants explore their acoustic surroundings from their listening perspectives. In this way, they experience and rediscover their personal environment. They get to know different techniques of listening and recording, apply them and invent their own sound spaces through digital editing. They track down found objects or everyday objects, record them and create sound portraits.

Δ Angklung workshop with Angklung KJRI with Anyra Zulinarti (director of the KJRI angklung group)

An angklung ensemble consists of around forty individual bamboo instruments that are gently shaken to create a sound. Since the 1940s, angklung sets have been modelled on a western/European style of music. A fairly large group of musicians is needed to play a song, with each musician playing one or several notes. The ensemble is directed by means of hand gestures, similar to a choir. In 2021 the Weltkulturen Museum bought an angklung ensemble which could be played for exhibition projects – now, for the first time, this will happen within a workshop setting.

    Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours

Further dates: 1 September, 3–5 pm respectively
