“From the clothes-line to the sound-track. Epic poems, songs of revolt, and hip hop in Brazil”

Talk by Dr. Mona Suhrbier (Frankfurt)

The rural population of the savannah of North-Eastern Brazil is known for its tradition of musical poetry, which became a huge influence on artists in the cities and was thereby raised to a level of national importance. Known in printed form as the “Literatura Cordel” (clothes-line literature), this type of poetry has undergone a process of constant renewal. Today it is drawn on by urban hip hop artists who rap its praises and transform its linguistic and musical structure.

    ENCYCLOPAEDIA CINEMATOGRAPHICA
    Ethnographische Kurzfilme von A-Z

As part of “B3”, the Frankfurt biennale of the moving image, the Museum presents for the first time a selection of over 100 ethnographic short films, produced between 1952 and 1994 under the title of “Encyclopaedia Cinematographica”. From the construction of a bridge in Afghanistan through to ray angling on the Gilbert Islands or the preparation of a poison arrow in Venezuela – these documentaries, shot on 16mm film, attempted to capture the essence of cultural innovation in different regions. Based on these “optical specimens” a cinematic lexicon of research and knowledge from around the world was created. The exhibition curated by Alice Pawlik presents these films in a sequence from A to Z along with accompanying publications and fieldwork photography.

    Until 1st Decembre 2013.
