    “Media Productions in Sub-Saharan Africa”
Prof. Mamadou Diawara (Frankfurt) and Dr. Röschenthaler (Frankfurt)

In his talk, Prof. Mamadou Diawara discusses the shifting role of the media in Sub-Saharan Africa, using selected examples that highlight continuities in pre-colonial and new electronic media. He proposes an all-encompassing concept of the media, which not only considers historical, but also societal contexts. The media exert a huge influence on social integration and the self-imaging of societiesand are formative of notions of nation or culture.

As part of the B3 Moving Image Biennial.

Mamadou Diawara is Professor of Anthropology at the Goethe University Frankfurt. He is “Principal Investigator” at the Cluster of Excellence, Deputy Director of the Frobenius Institute and Founding Director of Point Sud, The Center for Research on Local Knowledge, Bamako, Mali. His main research topics are Sub-Saharan Africa, local knowledge, development anthropology, oral history and oral traditions in the media age, globalisation and the history of Africa.
