'Ruth discovers a Hello Kitty lunchbox washed up on the shore of her beach home. Within it lies a diary that expresses the hopes and dreams of a young girl. She suspects it might have arrived on a drift of debris from the 2011 tsunami. With every turn of the page, she is sucked deeper into an enchanting mystery.In a small cafe in Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao Yasutani is navigating the challenges thrown up by modern life. In the face of cyberbullying, the mysteries of a 104-year-old Buddhist nun and great-grandmother, and the joy and heartbreak of family, Nao is trying to find her own place - and voice - through a diary she hopes will find a reader and friend who finally understands her.
Ruth Ozeki is a novelist, filmmaker, and Zen Buddhist priest. Her first two novels, My Year of Meats (1998) and All Over Creation (2003), have been translated into 11 languages and published in 14 countries. Her most recent work, A Tale for the Time-Being (2013), was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and will be published in over thirty countries. A longtime Buddhist practitioner, Ruth ordained in 2010 and is affiliated with the Brooklyn Zen Center and the Everyday Zen Foundation. She lives in British Columbia and New York City.

Once a year, the Friends of the Weltkulturen Museum invite an internationally renowned anthropologist to hold a special lecture. This year Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Duerr discusses “Near-Death Experiences and Journeys of the Soul”.
With some justification, near-death experiences have been described as the greatest unsolved mystery of consciousness research. Certainly, so far all attempts to explain them using psychiatry or psychology, philosophy, neurology or esotericism have failed. As the anthropologist and cultural historian Hans Peter Duerr will show, near-death experiences cast new light on the vocation experiences of certain shamans and the out-of-body journeys of the “bonnes dames” and “night-riders” of medieval and early modern Europe.
Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Duerr studied cultural anthropology, philosophy and sociology at the University of Vienna and the University of Heidelberg. He received his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1971, and habilitated at the University of Kassel in 1981. From 1975 on he worked as a lecturer and visiting professor of anthropology and cultural history at the University of Zurich, the University of Kassel and the University of Bern. From 1992 to 1999 he taught as a professor of anthropology and cultural history at the University of Bremen.
In 1990 he was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and in 1995/96 at the European University Institute of Florence. Duerr's regional research focuses on indigenous North America, East Indonesia and North Frisia.He has published several books in German, one of which has been translated as “Dreamtime: Concerning the Boundary between Wilderness and Civilization” (1985). From 1988 through to 2002 he published a five volume magnum opus entitled “Der Mythos vom Zivilisationsprozess”.
