    EXHIBITION OPENING
    "UNROLLED AND UNRAVELLED

    Δ EXHIBITION OPENING

    "UNROLLED AND UNRAVELLED
New Views of the Indonesian Textiles Collection"
    Tuesday, 15th April, 7pm

The Weltkulturen Museum holds an extensive collection of Indonesian textiles that have not been displayed for a very long time. Previously kept rolled up in the stores for reasons of conservation, some of these textiles are now being made accessible to the public again. The exceptional textiles are not only testimonies to outstanding craftsmanship, but also vehicles for coded messages. Much like barcodes, those messages also need to be deciphered.

The exhibition in the Weltkulturen Labor aims to test out different ways of reading the textiles. Rather than presenting finished results, UNROLLED AND UNRAVELLED offers insights into research ongoing in the museum, and raises new questions. What are the structures or grammar woven into the fabrics? Can the textiles be translated into other art forms? What knowledge was communicated through these fabrics? Are there continuities or analogies with local, national and global phenomena? And what meanings do the textiles generate?

UNROLLED  AND UNRAVELLED marks the beginning of a long-term process of thinking about the textiles in the Weltkulturen Museum, which will culminate in 2016 with a large supraregional exhibition.

In parallel with the exhibition, the outcomes of the research can also be accessed by the public at www.weltkulturen-openlab.com.

    READING AND SOUNDS

    Δ READING AND SOUNDS

    “Weiss reads Carl”
    Rüdiger Carl, Oliver Augst and
    Rainer Weiss (Frankfurt)

A new book, a premiere: in “Ab Goldap”, musician and composer Rüdiger Carl looks back on the most important stations of his life and talks about his companions and his many new departures in the world of the arts. Rainer Weiss and Oliver Augst offer samples of the book, with sound embellishments by Rüdiger Carl.

Rüdiger Carl is one of the most influential German musicians. His work spans Free Improvisation, Free Jazz and many more genres.
Since the 1960s he has collaborated with a wide variety of musicians, composers and performers, including Irène Schweizer, Hans Reichel, Sven-Ake Johansson, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Peter Brötzmann, as well as cabaret artiste Matthias Beltz. Since the 1990s, he has worked with representatives of the younger generation of experimental musicians such as Oliver Augst, Burkard Kunkel, and Christoph Korn. He has founded several ensembles and bands and initiated projects with visual artists such as Werner Büttner, Albert Oehlen, Martin Kippenberger, Günther Förg and Tobias Rehberger.
Impossible to pigeon-hole, Rüdiger Carl’s career path has been unorthodox, marked by unexpected twists and turns, intentional breaks, experiments and acts of non-compliance, which make him an original in the German art world.

Rainer Weiss, 1949 born in Karlsruhe, studied philosophy and history of literature. 1978-1984 at Piper, 1985-2006 at Suhrcamp – as Lector, Director of the Theaterverlag, Press Officer, Programme Director and at last Programme Managing Director of the publishers Suhrkamp and Insel. 2008 he founded the publisheing company weissbooks in Frankfurt am Main, together with Anya Schutzbach.

Oliver Augst, 1962 born in Andernach. He  has produced CDs, audio plays and theater works with several ensembles. International concerts as well as concerts and studio productions with Rüdiger Carl.
