“125,660 Specimens of Natural History - Navigating Colonial Collections in the Anthropocene"
    Anna-Sophie Springer (Berlin)

In the age of the Anthropocene, the assumed division between nature and culture is radically destabilized. The international touring exhibition “125,660 Specimens of Natural History: Re-imagining the Practice of Collections through Alfred R. Wallace's Malay Expedition” aims to rethink the future of colonial natural history collections developed by Wallace in the nineteenth century in the Malay Archipelago (opening at Komunitas Salihara, Jakarta,  Indonesia in 2015).

In her presentation, co-curator Anna-Sophie Springer discusses the ways in which a colonial archive can be reassessed through intercultural collaboration in order to produce relevant insight into the history of “colonial environmentalism” the legacy of colonial practices in the present, and the potential for applying these histories to contemporary conservation and the future of rainforest ecologies in Malaysia.

Anna-Sophie Springer (b. Berlin, 1980) is a curator, writer, editor, and co-director of K. Verlag. Springer completed an M.A. in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and an M.A. in Curatorial Studies at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig.

    Brands as Cultural Objects
Alfie Spencer, semiotician, Flamingo International Brand Consultancy (London)

What is a ‘brand’ in relation to its underlying objects? Can a brand be thought of as a thing at all? And what is the role of different cultures in the creating of a ‘global market’?
In his talk, Alfie Spencer discusses some of the ways that we can think about brands as part of the contemporary world, and how interpretive and critical practice informs the process of branding and communications.

Alfie Spencer studied philosophy at the University of Cambridge and is head of semiotics at Flamingo, a brand consultancy based in London. He specialises in using cultural theory and analysis to help companies build brands, communicate effectively, innovate and create content. Spencer works regularly with organisations across the industries, including Diageo, Unilever, the BBC and Universal records.

“The Morality of Banks. Ethical Problems in the Financial Markets”
with Prof. Dr. Sighard Neckel, sociologist, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and “Let’s Make Money” (2008)
Prof. Sighard Neckel discusses the nature of the financial system’s problems, the moral attitudes of the banks that contributed to the financial crisis, and the role that we ourselves play in this system. The discussion follows the screening of the documentary “Let’s Make Money”, director Erwin Wagenhofer (Austrian author and filmmaker), and explores the question of what banks do with our money. Managers, investors, economic experts and politicians give insights into the interconnections of the global economic and financial system, casting light on the excesses of neoliberalism and the injustices that prevail between the global North and South.

Prof. Dr. Sighard Neckel has been Professor of Sociology and Social Inequality at the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, since 2011. He is also Principal Investigator in the Goethe University’s cluster of excellence “Normative Orders” and a member of faculty at the Institute for Social Research. Among his publications are „Leistung und Erschöpfung. Burnout in der Wettbewerbsgesellschaft“ (2013); „Strukturierte Verantwortungslosigkeit. Berichte aus der Bankenwelt“ (2010); „Flucht nach vorn. Die Erfolgskultur der Marktgesellschaft“ (2008).

With Rainer Voss, former investment banker and protagonist in the film “Master of the Universe” (2013)
“Twenty years ago, the average holding period for a share was four years; today, it is just twenty-two seconds. Why would you hold a share in a company for twenty-two seconds? I just don’t understand it.” Rainer Voss, formerly one of Germany’s leading investment bankers, talks about his experiences in the documentary “Master of the Universe”, Director Marc Bauder (German director and film producer). In an empty bank building in Frankfurt – opposite the Weltkulturen Museum – he gives an impressive description of how the world of bankers operates. Questions on the film, the financial crisis and the future of finance will be discussed.
