    COMBINED GUIDED TOUR
“A LABOUR OF LOVE” and “LUKIM GEN - A RETROSPECTIVE. Art and Independence in Papua New Guinea”
With Berit Mohr (Cultural Anthropologist and Costume Designer)
Δ COMBINED GUIDED TOUR IN THE EXHIBITIONS “A LABOUR OF LOVE” AND “LUKIM GEN”

With Berit Mohr (Cultural Anthropologist and Costume Designer)

In parallel to the exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE, which showcases works by black South African artists from the 1980s, the exhibition “LUKIM GEN - A RETROSPECTIVE. Art and Independence in Papua New Guinea” is now looking at a particular era in the art of Papua New Guinea. While the South African artists had to struggle against apartheid and repression, the artists in Papua New Guinea in the 1960s and 1970s were driven by a particular mood of political optimism. As self-government became established in the country, a debate broke out in the 1960s over how to evolve an all-embracing cultural policy. Just like the South African works in the main building, the prints, drawings and paintings on show in the Weltkulturen Labor also represent one of the key areas in the museum’s contemporary art collection.

Δ CURATOR’S GUIDED TOUR “A LABOUR OF LOVE”

With Dr. Yvette Mutumba (co-curator of the exhibition and curator Africa, Weltkulturen Museum)

Dr. Yvette Mutumba offers an insight into the origins of the exhibition and the significance of the museum’s collection of contemporary South African art acquired in 1986. In this process, she explores new readings and interpretations of the works to cast a more differentiated light on their historical contexts. By questioning and critiquing a purely political localisation, she opens up new perspectives to show their relevance both to art history and to human experience.
