“Musical textures: Vision Of The Cosmic Light and Webmechanismen” With Raphaël Languillat (musicologist and composer, HfMDK Frankfurt am Main) and Tobias Hagedorn (composer of electronic and contemporary music, HfMDK Frankfurt am Main)
The contemporary works of these two composers were inspired by a silk shawl from Java and an ikat fabric from eastern Indonesia. Languillat’s “Vision of the Cosmic Light” (world premiere) for three baroque violas and four modern violas, and Hagedorn’s electronic composition “Webmechanismen” are being performed in the exhibition THE COMMON THREAD.
The project is a Weltkulturen Museum cooperation with the Institute of Contemporary Music (IzM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt (HfMDK).

Δ CONVERSATION IN THE EXHIBITION “THE COMMON THREAD - The warp and weft of thinking”
With Stephanie Endter (curator Education, Weltkulturen Museum)
Why are the principles for the first computer based on a loom? Why do so many maths teachers in Peru come from the families of weavers? What meanings lie behind the language of textile idioms? On this tour, Stephanie Endter provides the answers to these questions, and explains the idea behind the exhibition and its development.

Having to take off your gloves before you can check your smart phone is a thing of the past. We look at the various types of thread in THE COMMON THREAD exhibition, try to produce thread ourselves, and add a ‘smart thread’ to our gloves to transfer our movements to the smart phone.
For children from ten years old

Δ THEME RELATED GUIDED TOUR “The material of myths: Sacred robes and textile cosmogonies”
With Matthias Claudius Hofmann (research assistant, Weltkulturen Museum)
In all societies, threads, cords and textiles are crucially important culturally. This is particularly evident in myths and legends where textiles or the tools to produce them explain the origins of the world or, for instance, the nature of society. This tour looks specifically at the connection between textiles and their myths in the exhibition THE COMMON THREAD.

SATOURDAY: “Holes through which the spirits escape”
Weaving plays a major role in many folk and fairy tales. We explore THE COMMON THREAD exhibition and discover the traces of many folk and fairy tales from across the world in the fabrics on show – and find, for example, the holes through which the spirits escape. Afterwards, we create our own magical creatures, and print them on fabric bags.
For families with children from six years old
Free. Registration required
