Textiles made from tree bark have a long tradition in the arts around the world. In Oceania, eighteenth-century European explorers were fascinated by the large panels of barkcloth, often printed or painted with abstract patterns. But producing textiles from the inner bark of trees is also a widespread practice in parts of Africa, in South America and South-east Asia. Eva Neukirchner offers a fascinating insight into this alternative textile production technique, and outlines the significance of barkcloth in everyday life, rituals and art.

“Talking patterns”

What do patterns signify and how are they created on the fabric? The resist-dye technique is one particular approach to making patterns by tying up or covering with wax those parts of the fabric which should not be dyed. The technique can be found in many parts of the world, for example, as shibori in Japan, batik in Indonesia or adire in Africa, although each method uses slightly different approaches to create patterns with different meanings. We explore some of these techniques and work with batik, shibori and tie-dye methods to dye our own patterns on fabric.

“Close contact: Restoring barkcloth materials”

Items made from barkcloth have a long history – and are often marked by traces of their production, use, storage and exhibiting. If the materials are creased or torn, it is the conservator’s task to treat this damage.

After visiting the exhibition and a brief introduction into techniques for producing and restoring barkcloth, you have the chance to try out simple restoration techniques on barkcloth yourself.
