    Δ WORKSHOP WITH EXHIBITION TOUR

“May the Orixá be with you!”

The Orixá, the deities in the Candomblé religion in Brazil, all have different qualities - Ogum, for example, the Orixá of iron, stands for technology and logical thought; in contrast, Yemanjá, the Orixá of the sea, plays a dominant yet also protective role. What other Orixá are there and which qualities and stories are associated with them? And why were the Orixá forbidden for so many years - and yet still survive today?

We want to find out how the followers of the Candomblé religion can pacify and strengthen their Orixá, and what the Orixá offer people in return. Is it possible to find a personal helper to support and help us in the ups and downs of everyday life?

“The gift of poetry: rap as expression of indigenous identity”
With Arno Holl (research assistent and ethnologist)

Usually one doesn´t associate rap music with Brazilian indigenous peoples. Yet in recent years Guaraní Hip Hop acts made it even on national television. The tour will track the connection between Guaraní traditions and the medium of Hip Hop by means of exhibits and installations in the current exhibition.

    CURATORS´ GUIDED TOUR
“Entre Terra e Mar. Between Land and Sea. Transatlantic Art”
    With Dr. Mona Suhrbier
    Δ CURATOR’S GUIDED TOUR

Entre Terra e Mar. Between Land and Sea. Transatlantic Art

Curator Dr. Mona Suhrbier talks about the working process with Ayrson Heráclito and Rigo23 (participating artists of the exhibition) and guides through the exhibition “Entre Terra e Mar. Between Land and Sea. Transatlantic Art” out ouf the perspective of a curator.

The Weltkulturen Museum is presenting contemporary interventions and works fusing the political and lyrical by the internationally renowned artists Ayrson Heráclito and Rigo 23. The exhibition is the culmination of the museum’s many years of activities and research investigating the Afro-Brazilian and indigenous aspects of Brazil’s art and culture, and it provides a new impetus in present perceptions of transatlantic art processes between Africa, Europe and America. This is especially evident in the artists’ encounters with objects from the museum’s South America and Africa collections. Their selection of objects, which are also on show in the exhibition, offers a fascinating insight into their own concerns and interests.

    EXHIBITION OPENING

COLLECTED. BOUGHT. LOOTED? Case Studies from a Colonial and National Socialist Context

Exhibition opening: Wednesday, 15th August, 7pm

The exhibition will be opened with greeting speeches by Deputy major in charge of culture of the city Frankfurt am Main Dr. Ina Hartwig, acting director Dr. Eva Raabe, and the curators Julia Friedel und Vanessa von Gliszczynski, Weltkulturen Museum.

How did ancestor figures from Nias off the western coast of Sumatra enter the European art market in the early twentieth century? Why could the museum buy objects rather ‘cheaply’ in Paris and Amsterdam in the early 1940s? Is a weapon belt from South Africa war booty?
These are just some of the questions arising from a critical review of the Weltkulturen Museum’s collection. For many of the museum’s objects, their provenance remains vague with hardly any written records documenting their acquisition. To specifically address these issues, the exhibition COLLECTED. BOUGHT. LOOTED? presents a number of case studies to highlight collecting practices in the colonial context and under the Nazi regime. The histories of these objects clearly underline the importance of a long-term analysis of the museum’s own collection history. At the same time, the exhibition shows the limits often encountered when reconstructing the acquisition of museum objects and how, in many cases, the further questions raised remain unanswered.

This exhibition is part of a cooperation with the Historisches Museum Frankfurt, the Museum Judengasse, the Museum Angewandte Kunst and the Fritz-Bauer-Institut which are opened their own exhibitions on this topic in May and June 2018. The HR will support the project as a media partner.
Curated by Julia Friedel and Vanessa von Gliszczynski.

Accompanying the exhibition the Weltkulturen Museum offers Curators' Guided Tours and invites you to a Social Media Community Event “BOUGHT. COLLECTED. LOOTED? How things came into the museum ” on September 5th, 6.30 pm. Further information here.

    “What’s that doing here?”

Why and how did the exhibits come into the Weltkulturen Museum collection? In the exhibition COLLECTED. BOUGHT. LOOTED? we look at the origins of objects on show whose provenance is interwoven with colonial history or the history of the Third Reich in Germany.
