What does it mean to enter new phases of life, and how do we celebrate these transitions? Are there any particular objects which accompany us when making the transition into a new phase?

Starting off with selected objects from Samoa and Papua New Guinea, which we discover in the exhibition GREY IS THE NEW PINK, we find out about our personal symbols of transition and print them on t-shirts or bags.

“NIGHTpoets – Poetic interpretations of age(ing)”

NIGHTpoets Finn Holitzka (*1995), Samuel Kramer (*1996) and Roland Schneider (*1954) present on stage a poetic reading of age and the GREY IS THE NEW PINK exhibition. In their works, these two spoken word performers, known throughout Germany document the mood of the evening, integrate inputs from visitors, and present freshly-created vibrant and entertaining poems. This firework of slam poetry is supplemented by the lyrical performance of Roland Schneider, wordsmith and senior poet. The event provides an artistic mix of wordplay and pithy commentary by these three poets on the exhibition, ageing and the Night of the Museums.

„COLLECTION AS NARRATIVE - Wanzkes Artistic Journey Around the World“
with Reinhard Wanzke

With the objects they collect, museums and collectors create narratives. While travelling around the world in 2016/17, Frankfurt artist Reinhard Wanzke collected 50 artworks that could hardly be more diverse and each has its own story. You can find more information about the exhibition here.

INTERACTIVE STATION with „Peace of Paper“
7-11.30pm
The voluntary project from Munich "Peace of Paper" holds its first ever popular workshop in Frankfurt. The project brings together a playful idea of fledgling and local people on an artistic level.
At the "Night of the Museums" interactive station, visitors can be creative themselves and stamp out unusual gift papers and cards together with refugees. Alternatively, products created in advance can be taken home. Designing and printing stamps is a simple technique that makes it easy for people of all languages and countries to work together, share ideas, have fun, to get to know each other and network. The products support aid organizations working for people along the escape routes (IHA, Orient Helpers, Sea-Watch).

Wit Karsten Thormaehlen and Kathrin Sachse in the exhbition “GREY IS THE NEW PINK - Moments of Age(ing)”

Who is old – where and when? Can we meet the ‘challenge of ageing’ optimistically? And what potential lies slumbering in the process of aging?

Projections for global demographic trends are forecasting an increase in the world’s older population. The process of growing older is not just important for each individual, but has implications for the social and cultural spheres. Yet each generation ages differently. And when can we actually talk of someone as ‘old’ at all? Even if the visible biological aging processes are the same the world over, each culture has its differences in defining ‘age’. There is no universally valid definition of when ‘old age’ starts. So who is old – where and when?

GREY IS THE NEW PINK presents diverse ideas and models of ‘age(ing)’ from the perspective of cultural studies and the visual arts, as well as personal and individual experience. Like fragments in a lifetime’s memories, the exhibition combines into an anthology of aging the individual ways of dealing with such topics as lifestyle, love and sexuality, transmission of knowledge, longevity, illness, health, and death.

In the exhibition ‘age(ing)’ is explored internationally in photographs, videos, literature, drawings, as well as large-scale and multimedia installations and performances both in the work of scientists, artists and poets, as well as younger and older people from the general population. Numerous exhibits from the from the Weltkulturen Museum’s Africa, Americas, South East Asia, Oceania, Visual Anthropology collections  and the library broaden the view of the subject.

“Ageing – Concrete and Abstract”
Artists in Conversation with a tour of the exhibition

The exhibition includes portraits of centenarians – but what tips do they have for living to a ripe old age? Does eating minestrone help you live longer? What breaks in our biographies promote artistic creativity? And can decay have its own beauty?

Helena Kieß (curatorial assistant) and Leonie Neumann (research scholar) tour the exhibition and talk to these two photographers about centenarians, the ravages of time, and the process of artistic creativity.

Karsten Thormaehlen (*1965) is a German photographer and artist, presently living and working in Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main. After studying Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden. His work has been honoured with a range of prizes, including Gold at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2015, an Honourable Mention at the Px3 Prix de la Photographie, one of Europe’s leading photography competitions, and a nomination for the Robert Bosch Foundation’s German Senior Citizens’ Award. In addition Thormaehlen has dedicated a big part of his work to the topic age(ing) and is engaged in a campaign against age discrimination by the World Health Organisation (WHO), in a sport campaign for motivation of elderly people by the DOSB (German Olympic Sports Confederation) and enhanced demographic, Alzheimer’s and geriatric congresses with art instellations and lectures.

Kathrin Sachse (*1972) is Media Designer and freelance phtographer, currently living and working in Dreieich. With her agency for Media Design "KS kreativ und sozial" she is creating advertising concepts for social institutions and companies. Since 2015 she is publishing regularly photographic art calenders on the book market and since 2016 her photo art can be seen in solo and group exhibtions. Shape and colour stand in the middle of her photographic compositions, which can be placed between photgraphy and painting. Sachse succeeds to convey different  perspectives of life. With her work "Narbenseelenland", which has the aesthetic of decay in an artistic setting, she participated in the "Call for Content" for the exhibtion GREY IS THE NEW PINK.

Dr. Frank Oswald (Professor for Interdisciplinary Ageing Research, Goethe University Frankfurt), Nadia Qani (AHP Kultursensible Pflege, Frankfurt) and Dr. Eva Raabe (Acting Director, Weltkulturen Museum, Frankfurt) in a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Dörte Naumann (Professor for Social Gerontology, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences).

With specialists from the Rhein-Main region, the Weltkulturen Museum is taking a critical look at ageing in our society. This panel discussion aims to consider and debate in depth both the ‘pink’ and the ‘grey’ aspects of age.

A film evening with Kirstin Schmitt (director, Gelnhausen/Berlin) and Maren Schmitt (producer, Gelnhausen/Berlin)

Adelheid (79) always goes along with things and never makes a fuss. But Kornelius’s diagnosis of cancer is a shock to the accepted structure of their relationship. Adelheid senses she may well survive her beloved and dominant husband, and prepares herself for life as a widow. ADELHEID, KORNELIUS & DIE TÖDE is a lyrical and humorous documentary movie about relationships, ageing and death – above all, though, this is a declaration of a love of life! The protagonists in the film meet all life’s adversities with an unfiltered frankness of thought and loquacious humour.

Introduced by the director and producer, also present at the post-screening discussion.

Δ DANCE WORKSHOP 60+

Contemporary dance with its various approaches and expressive forms offers a good foundation to develop each participant’s own personal mobility. We begin with warm-up exercises for muscles and joints, enhancing our perception of our own bodies and the experience of our own potential for movement. We work individually, in pairs and as a group.

Petra Lehr works as a dancer, choreographer and dance instructor and is the founder of the co.lab.tanztheater (dance theater) in Frankfurt. She went to the Leonard Pitt School of Mime and Mask Theater (San Francisco), to the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center (New York).

No previous experience of dance is required. Please bring comfortable workout clothes and socks with you!

Do you know what a time capsule is? A time capsule can take things and impressions from today into the distant future. Inspired by the GREY IS THE NEW PINK exhibition, you create your own time capsules with sketches, collages and photos. What are your hopes and predictions for your future, and what might your lives look like when you are old?

At the end of the workshop, we seal your time capsules for the next fifty years until your 60th birthday. What do you think? Will you be surprised? Will your predictions come true? You’ll only know when you break the seal in the future! Please bring with you photos and little things you’d like to put in your time capsule.

Δ CLOSING EVENT: TOUR AND AUCTION

The Weltkulturen Museum cordially invites you to the finissage of the exhibition “COLLECTION AS NARRATIVE. Wanzke’s Artistic Journey Around the World” on Sunday, 19th May.

The 50 exhibits from all over the world, collected by Reinhard Wanzke during his world trip in 2016/17 and exhibited together for the first time at the Weltkulturen Museum, will be auctioned by the curator himself. At 11am, curator, collector and artist Reinhard Wanzke guides through the exhibition and shares some insights on the different stops of his journey.

The auction starts at 12am – the starting bids from 30€ allow everyone to participate.
All proceeds of the auction benefit the artists.
The auctioned works can be collected or sent next week.

With the objects they collect, museums and collectors create narratives. While travelling around the world, Frankfurt artist Reinhard Wanzke collected artworks that could hardly be more diverse: They range from an abstract painting by Ugandan artist WASWAD to a 3D graffiti by Australian street artist Screw7oose and a hand-painted ceramic by the artist Wang Hongjun from China. In the Weltkulturen Labor, the entire collection compiled in seven stages, are on exhibit for the first time, providing insight into the collector’s unique and personal experiences

Petra Lehr works as a dancer, choreographer and dance instructor and is the founder of the co.lab.tanztheater (dance theater) in Frankfurt. She went to the Leonard Pitt School of Mime and Mask Theater (San Francisco), to the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center (New York).

Christiane Lüder studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover and, among other activities, teaches at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt. Some examples of her projects are her intense work with Tango Nuevo, performances and premieres of contemporary composers.
