    “Simply iron?”
    With Mareike Mehlis  (conservator)

What does the work of conservators involve? What are their tasks in setting up an exhibition? Answers are given by Mareike Mehlis, who completed her studies in “Conservation and Restoration of Archaeological, Ethnological and Artistic Objects” in Stuttgart with a diploma in restoration. She provides visitors a slightly different view of the exhibition.

“The Making-of THE COMMON THREAD and AND THE BEAT GOES ON…”
With Vanessa von Gliszczynski (ethnologist and curator South East Asia) and Matthias Claudius Hofmann (ethnologist, research assistant)

Threads, materials and patterns are taken for granted as a natural part of our daily life. Around the world, textile ideas and terms shape our language, narratives, stories and myths. The making of textiles stimulates our spatial and mathematical thinking. The curators of the exhibition introduce the concept and structure of the exhibition THE COMMON THREAD and give insight into the culturally multifaceted techniques of textile production.

In the second part of the curators combination tour the main theme is the exhibition AND THE BEAT GOES ON… as a spin-off to the COMMON THREAD. The curators offer a deeper insight into the development process of the exhibition as well as the production and cultural meanings of the exhibited barkcloth fabrics and discuss the common musicality of woven textiles and rhythmically beaten bark.

“AND THE BEAT GOES ON...Barkcloth from the Collections of the Weltkulturen Museum
Textiles made from tree bark have a long tradition in the arts around the world. In Oceania, eighteenth-century European explorers were fascinated by the large panels of barkcloth, often printed or painted with abstract patterns. But producing textiles from the inner bark of trees is also a widespread practice in parts of Africa, in South America and South-east Asia. Eva Neukirchner offers a fascinating insight into this alternative textile production technique, and outlines the significance of barkcloth in everyday life, rituals and art.
