Where do the objects in the museums come from? Who collected them? What significance do they have for the original owners?

In today's interview in the FAZ, Dr. Eva Raabe, Director of the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt am Main, talks about provenance research and its challenges and opportunities for the Weltkulturen Museum Frankfurt am Main, but also for other museums and cities worldwide as well as for indigenous societies.

She addresses the importance of the return of objects for indigenous communities, which in North America, for example, is often seen as part of a social healing process, a "healing". This is illustrated by the history of the Lakota leather shirt, which was restituted by the Weltkulturen Museum in 2021:

„Although an object has now been separated from the collections, the relationship with the indigenous society of origin has gained a different quality.“
