ENCYCLOPAEDIA CINEMATOGRAPHICA

Ethnographic short films from A-Z

Until 1st December 2013

Exhibition Opening: Tuesday, 29th October, 6pm

As part of “B3”, the Frankfurt biennale of the moving image, the Museum presents for the first time a selection of over 100 ethnographic short films, produced between 1952 and 1994 under the title of “Encyclopaedia Cinematographica”.

From the construction of a bridge in Afghanistan through to ray angling on the Gilbert Islands or the preparation of a poison arrow in Venezuela – these documentaries, shot on 16mm film, attempted to capture the essence of cultural innovation in different regions. Based on these “optical specimens” a cinematic lexicon of research and knowledge from around the world was created.

The exhibition curated by Alice Pawlik presents these films in a sequence from A to Z along with accompanying publications and fieldwork photography.
