NEW VIEWS OF THE INDONESIAN TEXTILES COLLECTION
Since early this year, some of the textiles of the Indonesian Textiles Collection have been unrolled, examined, and photographed in the Weltkulturen Labor. The project aims to research the significance of the fabrics and their motifs and provide new interpretations. These exceptional textiles not only demonstrate excellent craftsmanship, but are also vehicles for coded messages.
The majority of the textiles came to the museum in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. They include prada work, embellished with gold leaf from southern Sumatra as well as rare weaving from the eastern Indonesian islands of Seram, Sermata and Kisar.
