CHANGING MATERIALS. Fashion and Paper
As part of the “CHANGING MATERIALS. Fashion and Paper” project, young people from Frankfurt’s districts of Sindlingen and Höchst explored the world of fabrics in the Weltkulturen Museum, and then made fashion objects from paper themselves.
During their visit, the young participants visited the museum’s library, gaining an insight into the extensive holdings available. They also investigated the current exhibition THE COMMON THREAD after first watching how the museum’s restorers prepared exhibits for the show AND THE BEAT GOES ON…in the Weltkulturen Labor. On their tour, they not only looked at various techniques and processes in textile production, but also at alternatives to so-called ‘fast fashion’.
At the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK) Frankfurt integrated workshop, the project participants learned how to make paper by hand. Afterwards, with assistance from the museum’s educators, they applied artistic and experimental approaches to designing garments and accessories from their own hand-made paper. The entire process was also captured on camera. The Weltkulturen Museum presented the young people’s paper creations and the documentary film in the exhibition “CHANGING MATERIALS. Fashion and Paper” from 1st to 18th June 2017.
“CHANGING MATERIALS. Fashion and Paper” is a cooperation between the Weltkulturen Museum and the Meisterschule youth welfare service together with the Sindlingen Youth Club, the Walter-Kolb-Schule youth welfare service, and the Frankfurt Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK) integrated workshop. This project is run under the Deutsche Museumsbund (German Museum Association) initiative “Von uns – für uns! Die Mussen unserer Stadt entdeckt” (By us – For Us – Discover our city’s museums). Supported by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. We would like to thank the media project centre Offener Kanal for their generous support.
