Collective Printing
A printing workshop to accompany the exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE.
From 1st to 5th February 2016, the Weltkulturen Museum hosted the “Collective Printing Workshop”, a cooperation between the Weltkulturen Museum and the Rüsselsheim adult education centre as part of Kultur123 Rüsselsheim. The five-day workshop was specifically designed to accompany the museum’s exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE.
The participants, all aged between 16 and 18 years old, came from a number of different countries (Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Greece, France, Turkey and Italy) and had lived in Germany for periods between seven months and two years. The young people, who are attending different intensive German language courses at the Werner Heisenberg School in Rüsselsheim, joined the workshop for their school project week.
After a preparatory meeting at their school, the group of twelve students met over the following days in the Weltkulturen Museum. In the mornings, they visited the exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE to discover and explore the history of the Weltkulturen Museum’s collection of South African contemporary art. In these sessions, the participants also drafted their first sketches and developed ideas for the printing workshop.
After the daily visit to the exhibition, the second session took a creative approach to introducing and experimenting with a range of printing techniques. With the assistance of the workshop staff where needed, the young participants then applied their newly acquired skills to create their own works. On the last day of the workshop, each participant designed their own double-page layout of images and text for a fanzine. They could then present the jointly-produced fanzine at school, and each keep one copy for themselves.
