Collective Painting
Accompanying the exhibition “EL HADJI SY: Painting, Performance, Politics”, together with the Weltkulturen Museum’s education department, Senegalese artist El Hadji Sy designed the “Collective Painting” workshop.
For one week, artist El Hadji Sy and a group of young people attending an intensive German course at the Hostatoschule Höchst created a temporary collective. Under El Hadji Sy’s guidance, the collective experimented with a wide range of painting techniques and supports, such as potato sacks or sheets of glass, both materials used for works on show in the exhibition. During the week, the collective produced around 70 works. These were then sold at the flea market held on the southern bank of the River Main, and the proceeds distributed among the young artists.
Workshop participants: Ahlam (Morocco), Antonio (Croatia), Bahlbi (Eritrea), Catalina (Romania), Evelin (Bulgaria), Jakub (Poland), Mohammed (Spain), Wojtek (Poland)
Our thanks go to Sina Hairali, Daniel Hewson and Jan Schierkolk for actively supporting the collective.
We would also like to thank the Metzler Stiftung for their generous funding.
